Egyptian Tourism Down by More Than 50% in First Half of 2016 According To CAPMAS

Tourism is down by half in the first half of 2016 compared to the same time period last year according to CAPMAS.

According to the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics, in the first half of 2016, the number of tourists coming to Egypt has dropped by 51.2 percent compared to the same period last year.

CAPMAS' figures pinpoint the number of tourists visiting the country at 2.3 million compared to 4.8 million during the same time in 2015. Russian tourism alone dropped by 54.9 percent.

This isn’t altogether surprising considering that terrorism and plane crashes, such as the MS804 and the Russia jet to Sharm El Sheikh, led to suspending flights to Egypt from both Russia and the UK.

The government has been exerting incredible efforts in reviving tourism in Egypt such as through their #ThisIsEgypt campaigns and the multilingual online portal promoting Egyptian sites.
