Square Cast Banned from Travel
Egyptian actors in the Oscar-nominated documentary missed out on last night's festivities due to various travel bans - a plight that affects many young Egyptians.
Some of the best known actors from the Egyptian Oscar nominated documentary were slapped with a travel ban preventing them from attending the ceremony last night. Two of the movie's main character,s Ahmed and Magdy, along with the documentary's main singer Ramy were denied permission to leave Egypt in time for the star-studded bash.
Speaking before the event, the film's director Jehane Noujam hit out at the decision to prevent the trio from travelling. She said: "We would love to be celebrating this day more than anything with the lead character, Ahmed, but we can't get him permission to leave [Egypt]. Ramy, the singer in the film, also doesn't have permission to leave the country. Magdy is currently in hiding; he obviously can not leave because he was 25 years in [Mohamed] Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood, which is now being persecuted."
The Square was a contender for Best Feature Documentary but lost out to US flick, Feet from Stardom.
