The new app enabling users to explore both Egypt’s prime and lesser-known sightseeing spots, Around Egypt, has officially launched two days ago. The brainchild of Egypt VR and ML, the idea came into fruition in 2018 and shortly after was launched as a beta version in 2019.
Showcasing over 30 virtual tours of sites across 11 governorates, the app includes everything from natural reserves like the Rainbow Canyon in Sinai to the Hanging Church in Cairo. “We came up with the concept in collaboration with Egypt VR, after our two companies worked on a project for Mori Co. that involved creating virtual tours for the company’s restaurant locations,” Ashraf Mourad, Tech Lead at ML, told CairoScene.
The virtual tours were developed over a seven-year period by Egypt VR, and aim to cover all facets of Egypt’s storied history. Sites from Fatimid Egypt, ancient Egypt, the Byzantine era, and even post-colonial Egypt are included— not to mention diverse natural landscapes from across our nation.
“Users can know what to expect from any site they visit in Egypt before physically going," said Mohamed Attef, Founder of Egypt VR. "It can help to entice people to visit these locations, especially tourists who are interested in coming to Egypt."
All historical information included on the app is completely verified, and includes general information on ticket prices and opening hours, among other things. The app is now available for download on iPhone and Android. It can also be found on the Oculus Store, a platform that allows users to have an immersive experience in virtual tours through specialized functions that aren’t available on the App Store and Google Play.
